singer and a civilian member of the People's Liberation Army.
She was born on June 27,
1992 to Xi's second wife, Peng Liyuan, a well-known folk singer and a civilian
member of the People's Liberation Army. She is reportedly guarded by Chinese
bodyguards 24 hours a day, while the FBI also has agents secretly assigned to
protect her.
Xi belongs to the
youngest generation of China's "red nobility," the descendants of
illustrious revolutionary leaders. Her grandfather, the former state councilor
Xi Zhongxun, gave her the nickname Xiao Muzi,
designating her as an innocent
and decent person who is useful to society. Xi Mingze is reputed to be a
low-key and easy-going girl, who counts reading and fashion among her hobbies.
Xi was studying
translation at Hangzhou Foreign Language School in 2009 before she transferred
to Harvard in May 2010.
In 2008, when performing
and paying her condolences in the area devastated by the Sichuan earthquake,
Peng Liyuan told media that her then-16-year-old daughter went to Hanwang, one
of the worst affected areas, to serve as a volunteer for seven days.
Peng said her daughter
asked her schoolteacher for a leave of absence and went to Hanwang's Dongqi
primary school, where she spent a week assisting relief efforts and caring for
injured survivors. At that time, Peng was asked, "Your daughter is only
16, for a girl as young as her to serve as a volunteer in a disaster zone,
don't you worry about her?"
Her mother replied,
"As the earthquake claimed so many lives and triggered such a big
disaster, my daughter should go to the frontline to help. During seven days as
a volunteer, she worked hard and never complained. She learned a lot and also
made lots of local friends. She said people in Sichuan are nice, strong and
kind."
