A video that mocks Rob Ford’s catalogue of excuses about his crack cocaine use went viral on social media when it was posted Wednesday morning.
The brief clip shows a girl calmly doing her homework as her Dad tries to pry information from her about a cracked windowpane in the family’s living room.
As the scene unfolds, the girl uses some of the same excuses Ford has used in the past to defend his behaviour, albeit in a different context, to avoid admitting she cracked the pane of glass.
The short video ends with a simple message: “Our Children are Listening.”
“For me, at a certain point you have to say something when things get really absurd,” said Ron Murphy, the video’s creator and a professional TV director.
“This is my small way of hoping to change the conversation a little bit to something that’s actually relevant to people.”
He said he got the idea during a conversation with a friend about whether people really want Ford as a role model for their kids.
“I think every citizen tries to use whatever gifts they have to affect change in our society and culture, and my gift is storytelling and comedy, so I just put this out there.”
The entire film cost him about $100 to feed his crew of volunteers. “I actually don’t know how many times the video has been shared, but it’s been nonstop on my computer every time I check.”
