镜头记录千变万化冰川绝景

41岁的摄影师Tim Vollmer花了数年进行冰川的主题创作，无论是被火山灰所淹没的壮丽景象还是因全球变暖而逐渐融化的坍塌瞬间，他都冒着严寒将他们一一记录在镜头内。2010年冰岛艾雅法拉发火山爆发时，Tim更是拍摄下了晶莹剔透的冰川瞬时变成黑暗一片的末日绝景。

Queens face beamed onto Buckingham Palace

A giant image of Queen Elizabeth II has been beamed onto Buckingham Palace as part of the monarch's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The montage was made up of 200,000 self-portraits by British schoolchildren.

Children across the UK were asked to create a self-portrait in any form they wanted.

Digital pictures were then taken of their creations and used to form the royal montage.

The "Face Britain" project was created by Prince Charles' Foundation for Children and the Arts. Children aged between 4 and 16 years old took part.

As well as the projection on to Buckingham Palace the images will be simultaneously screened for 24 hours on big screens in 18 public locations across the UK.

潜入万米深海

《铁达尼号》、《阿凡达》大导演詹姆斯克麦隆又有新作，但这次不用剧本，不用演员，而是亲自上阵拍摄高难度的深海3D纪录片。昨天他顺利潜入世界最低点、太平洋海面下近1.1万公尺深的「挑战者深渊」海底，停留3个多小时后回到海面，完成单人挑战马里亚纳海沟最深处的壮举。

「探底的感觉从未如此美好，我迫不及待想要分享见闻」，57岁的詹姆斯克麦隆（James Cameron）在台湾时间昨晨5时52分许，到达深约1万890公尺的「挑战者深渊」的海底，他在潜艇中就透过推特发文，向全世界宣告他的喜悦。他本以为在海底会看见什么奇怪生物，但只看到像小虾类的小型生物，他觉得好寂寞：「那真是遗世独立的感觉，在黑暗未知之处，自己变得好渺小。」

深度逾圣母峰

克麦隆花2个半小时到达海底，停留约3个多小时，拍摄3D影像，采取海底生物与地质样本，接着花70分钟浮上海面，接运船很快找到他，他看来状况还不错，但需要接受进一步体检。

「挑战者深渊」是西太平洋上马里亚纳海沟（Mariana Trench）的最深处，位于关岛南方约320公里处。马里亚纳海沟深度超越圣母峰高度，面积约美国大峡谷的120倍。海底温度近乎冰点，对人类而言有如外星般难测。

Cupcake Vending Machines

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Sprinkles, the Beverly Hills bakery that helped inspire the craze for sweet frosting in snack-size portions, will launch a cupcake dispensing machine at its flagship store.

Founder and owner Candace Nelson said her company is rolling out the first high-tech vending machine on Tuesday, with three more in the works for New York City by the summer.

The ATM-like machine features a touchscreen and a robotic arm that pulls the right flavored cupcake from a wall of single-serving boxes inside the store.

Nelson said the custom-built gadget is in response to demand for increased hours at the popular store.

"After dinner people want a cupcake. But we can't be open all night long because of our poor employees. So we'll just stock it fresh before they leave for the evening and it'll be good to go," she said.

The machines will be restocked constantly throughout the day so the goods stay fresh.

Nelson said she was inspired to make the sugary treats available 24-7 when she realized that she couldn't satisfy her own late-night cravings.

"I was pregnant with my second child and I thought, I'm the owner of a cupcake bakery and even I can't get a cupcake in the middle of the night," she said.

Customers think the vending machines are a sweet idea.

"You can never have too much access to your cupcakes," said Patrick Swope of Rogers, Ark., who was visiting the Sprinkles New York City shop with his family.

上海“睡衣文化”

上海街头睡衣族。不知从何时开始，穿睡衣上街在上海一些市民中开始成为潮流。弄堂里，菜场上，超市里，马路上，甚至在著名商业街南京路上也屡见不鲜。穿着花睡衣的女人，脚踩一双还算精致的皮鞋，跑到弄堂口买一包盐，或者顶着满头发卷出来倒垃圾……这被看作是上海市井文化的典型画面。

这种‘内衣外穿’追逐时髦的方式不但暴露了着装者的隐私，更影响了市容市貌。

政府近些年认为“睡衣文化”不合国际礼仪，担心满街穿着睡衣的民众会给这个城市带来负面影响，于是试图劝阻市民穿睡衣上街。着睡衣上街呼吁管理，呼吁市民的自觉维护！

但在坦率的市井风情人为制造的景观之间，也许还是有些人都会选择那一丝的人间烟火气。 确实，为什么不呢？这就是上海。

Glacier Collapse

Huge chunk of Argentina's Perito Moreno glacier collapses (Feb 2012)

Part of the Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina's Patagonia has broken off putting on a spectacular show.

The glacier, a massive tongue of ice in the Santa Cruz province that covers 97 square miles, advances yearly into a lake, known as Lago Argentino.

As Perito Moreno moves forward, it cuts off a river feeding the lake. Water builds up pressure and slowly undermines the ice, forming a tunnel until ice comes tumbling down.




Glacier collapse rocks tourist boat (Aug 2011)

The boat was taking tourists through the Tracy Arm Fjord, a deep fjord over 30 miles long in the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness in Alaska.

When a large chunk of ice falls off the side of a nearby glacier there is panic aboard the tourist boat and one woman reportedly broke her leg.

Apart from the dangers of falling ice, collapsing icebergs may also cause tidal waves that can tip small boats over.

Kensington Market: 没有犹太人的“犹太市场”

多伦多市中心Dundas街和College街交界处，也就是中区华埠的西侧，有一个Kensington Market，华人习惯将之称为「犹太市场」(又名肯森顿市场)。可是，在来来往往的顾客中，几乎看不到一个犹太人;再看看街边的商店，则琳琅满目地陈列着来自欧洲、亚洲、南美、中东及加勒比海地区的商品，和犹太文化也沾不上边。

「犹太市场」是多伦多最古老的社区之一，其历史可以上溯到1812年美加战争的时期。1815年，加拿大民兵领袖丹尼森(George Taylor Denison)将这片土地买下来，建了农庄和马场(就是今天「犹太市场」里Bellevue Square Park的位置)。值得一提的是，丹尼森的民兵马队后来在平定1837年上加拿大叛乱(Upper Canada Rebellion)中立功，被改编为「总督骑兵护卫队」(The Governor General''s Horse Guards)，这支部队今天还在编制中，是加拿大仅有的三支骑兵部队之一。

1850年代丹尼森去世后，他的这块产业被划分成小块的居民区和商业区。1880年代，这块地方成为爱尔兰和苏格兰移民劳工的社区，建起了很多英国维多利亚时代式样的排屋(row houses)。这些占地小、经济实惠排屋是19世纪中后期多伦多移民大潮的独特记号，记载了一波又一波移民的足迹。今天，在「犹太市场」旁的Wales大街上，我们仍然可以看到不少排屋。

1910年的犹太市场还是个居民区。来自东欧的犹太移民和一些意大利移民开始占据这个社区。至二十年代时，大约六万名犹太人都聚居在此地，占多伦多总犹太人口的80%，并盖了超过30间的犹太教堂。这个善于经商的民族将自住宅改为店面，「犹太市场」便由此诞生。犹太人的生意通常是裁缝、皮毛商、面包店，还有杂货店，出售从欧洲进口的小商品。

第二次世界大战后，大部份赚到钱的犹太人渐渐离开市中心区朝北迁移。1950年后，葡萄牙属国亚速尔群岛的人因政治因素逃到多伦多，进驻此区。后来，加勒比海国家人民和东亚各国越来越多进驻或在附近定居。1980和1990年间，主要的移民为苏丹、索玛里、埃塞俄比亚、伊朗、越南和其他政治纷乱国家人民的新移民的天地。

今天，多伦多大部份的犹太人都在多伦多北边的康山(Thornhill)和旺市(Vaugh)聚集。至于这块「犹太市场」，也仅仅剩下了一个名字。

2006年12月，「犹太市场」被正式立为加拿大国家历史古蹟(National Historic Site of Canada)。
