Social media sleuths help track down VW for
vacationing friend
The three people left on the planet who are
not yet convinced of Facebook’s powers might be swayed after hearing about how
a woman got her stolen car back thanks to social media sleuths.
The woman, Aja Ng of Etaling Jaya, Thailand,
was away on vacation when her home was broken into and her beloved Volkswagen
Tiguan was stolen,Bangkok’s
Star Online reports.
The robbers not only carted away some of their
belongings, but also drove away her car.
Devastated, Ng immediately posted a picture of
her car on Facebook with the posting: “Our house in Bangsar was robbed last
night and my car was one of the stolen items. If you spot it, call the cops, if
you know of a car syndicate please ask if this car has come up. It’s hard to
miss. No one was hurt, we are all ok. Share please!”
Within minutes, her post was shared by 113
people. Nine hours later, she was told her car had been spotted in Damansara
Kim, she told the Star Online.
“We took the first flight back from Bali and
arrived in Kuala Lumpur at about 1 a.m.,” she said.
After tracking down the car, Ng called the
police to inform them, but minutes later the car was gone again. She and her
husband drove around in a panic and “by sheer luck” found the car again in a
nearby car park.
“This time, we did not let the car out of our
sight and quickly called the cops,” she said. Ng credits the help of her
friends and police, and especially Facebook and “the wonders of social media.”
